Join the JMM for the closing of Material/Inheritance: Contemporary Work by New Jewish Culture Fellows, an exhibition featuring 30 artists whose work has been supported by the New Jewish Culture Fellowship (NJCF), a national arts fellowship that advances the work of groundbreaking Jewish artists.
The event will feature music, performances, and more, including:
2:00 PM / Neshome Likht for Ecological Relatives
Tyler Rai will activate their installation Neshome Likht for Ecological Relatives in the JMM’s courtyard. Rai’s installation applies the Ashkenazi practice of grave-measuring to “ecological relatives” in peril due to climate change. They will activate it with a ritual candle burning and reading of Museum visitor-contributed tkhines, or prayers.
3:00 PM / Long Tones in Bewilderment
Long Tones in Bewilderment is a concert and dance performance by Hadar Ahuvia and Tatyana Tenenbaum. Inspired by B’midbar, the Torah’s book of Numbers, the performance will integrate mystical traditions of chanting with Hasidic nigunim, or wordless melodies, fragments of musical theater, original songs, and the artists’ collaborative vocal research.
4:00 PM / Ya Ghorbati: Divas in Exile
Laura Elkeslassy will perform a concert weaving together the stories of Judeo-Arab divas from the last century with folk and sacred music. The concert is a musical excavation of Elkeslassy’s family history in Morocco, France, and Israel. Ya Ghorbati looks across time and space to tell a tale of political upheaval, exile, and displacement—ultimately questioning the supposed binary of Arab and Jew.
Featuring Ira Khonen Temple (music direction, keys, accordion), April Centrone (percussion), Mehrnam Rastegari (kamanche), Rachid Halilhal (oud), and Marwan Allam (bass).
