Echoes and Exchange: Jewish Identity in Song

Thursday August 27

Other dates...

7:00 PM  –  9:00 PM

Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland and Opera Baltimore for a vocal recital exploring the complex interplay between tradition and transformation, belonging and exclusion, and resilience and loss–forces that have shaped and continue to shape American-Jewish life and artistic expression. Performed by internationally renowned soprano Sara Duchovnay, the program features the works of Jewish composers including Camilla Frydan, Abraham Goldfaden, Kurt Weill, Baltimore composer Hugo Weisgall, and more.

This program is presented as part of the Museum’s Core Connections program series, highlighting the theme “Agents of Change” within the Museum’s new core exhibition, Jews of Maryland at the Crossroads of Identity, and the historical connections between Black and Jewish communities in Maryland. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy song and piano accompaniment, explore Crossroads in the Meyerhoff Gallery, and experience an evening of community and connection.

The recital is part of Voices in Solidarity: Baltimore’s Black and Jewish Operatic History, a place-based initiative highlighting the deeply intertwined histories of the city’s Black and Jewish communities through music, conversation, and education.

Voices in Solidarity is conducted by Opera Baltimore in partnership with the Jewish Museum of Maryland and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture, and is generously supported by the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation, the David and Barbara B. Hirschhorn Foundation, and State funds from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority.
